Critically, the first season was hailed as a masterpiece, often cited as having the greatest pilot episode in television history. Its 25 episodes (including the double-length pilot) were an event, generating countless fan forums, theories, and a level of cultural discussion rarely seen for a network TV show. Many consider this season to be the show's high point, a tight, character-driven thriller that promised more than it could eventually deliver in later, more convoluted seasons.
