This version is over a decade old. It lacks modern security patches, making it risky to expose this server to the internet. It is highly recommended to use this on a local-only network (no remote access).

This includes popular older models like the Synology DS213 and certain Western Digital or ReadyNAS units.

Previously, if a user wanted to find a movie or a specific TV show, the search function was confined to the single library section they were browsing. Version 0.9.17.0 introduced cross-library search indexing. Typing a query into the global automatically scanned all libraries of the same media type simultaneously, significantly speeding up content discovery across vast collections. 3. Plex Media Server (PMS) version was released by Plex, Inc. in late 2015 (initially as a public beta, then general availability). This version represents a transitional period for Plex, bridging the earlier 0.9.x series—known for stability and core feature refinement—with the later features that would define modern Plex (such as hardware transcoding and more advanced user management).

In early 2016, Plex was transitioning from a niche hobbyist tool into a mainstream consumer media platform. Before the 0.9.17.0 release, the server architecture relied on older codebases that struggled with high-bitrate 1080p video transloads and early 4K files.

You cannot reliably leap straight from version 0.9.17.0 to the newest version of Plex without risking database corruption. The recommended path is a stepped upgrade: Back up your existing Plex Media Server data directory.

This increased security had a significant side effect: it could potentially lock out users if not configured carefully, especially on headless NAS devices. The server might not recognize the user as the "owner," resulting in a "null" owner status and leaving the user locked out of their own server. The fix involved stopping the server and deleting a Preferences.xml file on the system.

The server became smarter at transcoding ahead of the user's playback position and pausing (throttling) to save electricity and hardware wear. 2. Enhanced Security and Secure Connections
